Description
Manor house. Datestone HWE/1662. Limestone lias and ashlar, with slate roof. Originally irregular cruciform plan. 2 storeys with attic. Garden front of 3-window range has central projecting cross wing. C20 door to right of cross wing under C17 four-centred moulded stone arch. Cross wing and bay to right have 3-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights to ground and first floor, and one 2-light similar window to attic. Bay to right has 2 single-light windows with moulded stone surrounds. Gable stonework is banded limestone and lias. Ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, and brick stack at ridge. Datestone to far right of carved rosette in central gable. Elevation to right of garden front similar but having some C20 windows and with large early C20 gabled extension to right in similar style. Elevation to left of garden front similar with 2- and 3-light stone mullion windows and main entrance with C20 door under C17 four-centred moulded stone arch. The gable to the right has banded limestone and lias. Large early C20 extension to left in similar style. Interior: Entrance Hall, originally the Kitchen, has open fireplace. First floor room has a moulded stone fireplace with a fragment of a large metope frieze with a bucranium and rosette in the metope; reputedly reset from Holdenby Palace.
