Description
Raised terrace incorporating walls, balustrade and sets of steps. C.1905. By Sir Reginald Blomfield for Lord Brassey. Ashlar and coursed squared rubblestone. The raised terrace surrounds and forms the sunken garden and has rubblestone retaining walls surmounted by a balustrade in simplified Renaissance style formed of open diamonds and rectangles between piers. In the centre of the four sides are sets of curved steps with piers at the sides. Ball finials surmount those to east and west. Paved paths here link to the outer edges where there are further steps on the west side and steps and retaining walls on the north and east sides. In the centre of the garden formed by the terrace is the Pond (qv). With this and the other items at Apethorpe surrounding the house the Sunken Garden forms a significant group. The gardens at Apethorpe are included in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II.
