Description

Manor house. C15 to C17 and C19, with datestone 1682. Probably originally for De Roos family. Ironstone and limestone with ashlar dressings and Colleyweston slate roof. Now 3-unit plan, originally larger. 2 storeys with attic. Main front of 3-window range at first floor of 5-light wood mullion and transom windows, under wood lintels. 2 pairs of C15 two-light stone mullion windows at ground floor have arch-head lights with cusping and hood moulds. Two 2-light wood casements to far right. C15 arch-head door openings to far left has moulded tone surround and plank door. Plank door to right of centre under wood lintel. Two 3-stage gable parapets and ashlar stacks at ridge and end. All windows have leaded diamond panes. 2 shields above entrance door, one is that of De Roos family. Right gable has datestone in apex. Left gable has large chimney projection with buttress and evidence of blocked openings. C19 and C20 extensions to rear. Right bay of main front was probably added late C17 also house probably extended further to left. Interior: room to rear to right of entrance has open fireplace with bressumer. Centre room and room to far left have high ceilings and moulded spine beams supported on arched corbel between windows. C17 wood dog-leg stair has short turned balustrade at attic level. First floor rooms have moulded spine beams and centre room has large stone fireplace, probably C15 with sloping hood. Close studded screen between first floor rooms. Roof structure is probably part C17 with original trusses and some curved wind braces. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.415; The Old Halls and Manor Houses of Northamptonshire by J.A.
