Description

Dovecote. c.1800, restored C20. Timber. Square cote with pyramidal ridged timber roof on square Doric pillar. 3 tiers of roostings with cusped arched head to central openings others round-headed. Perches below roostings on brackets. Overhanging bracketed eaves. Another wider perch below capital of supporting post on curved brackets. A dovecote has stood in the same position to centre of court by west front of Castle Ashby (q.v.) since at least C17. The present structure is shown in a drawing by George Clarke of Scaldwell of c.1820.
