Description
List Entry Description Summary of Building First World War memorial, c1920, with later additions for the Second World War. Reasons for Designation Evenley War Memorial, set on the southern edge of Evenley’s large Green, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20; * Design: a well-executed medieval-style stone cross. History No date for the memorial is recorded but it was presumably erected c1920 when most of the country’s war memorials were raised. An additional inscription for the Second World War was added after 1945. Details The memorial stands on the south edge of the large Green. It comprises a simple limestone cross, c4m high, with an inverted sword carved on both the front and rear faces. The shaft rises from a three-stage octagonal plinth on a square base. On the front face of the plinth is inscribed THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ LEST WE FORGET. The names of the fallen occupy other faces of the plinth. Beneath, on the top tier of the base, is inscribed 1939-1945. The modern flagged surround to the memorial is excluded from the listing.
