LIST ENTRY DESCRIPTION SUMMARY OF BUILDING First World War memorial, c.1920, with later additions for the Second World War. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION Barton Seagrave War Memorial, on St Botolph’s Road, is listed at Grade II for the following reasons: * Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20; * Design: a competently executed stone Calvary; * Group value: with the Grade I-listed church of St Botolph and the Grade II-listed Manor House. HISTORY The memorial was presumably erected c.1920 like most English war memorials. DETAILS First World War memorial, c.1920, with later additions for the Second World War. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands on a small green alongside and north of the churchyard of St Botolph’s church (Grade I). It comprises a well-carved limestone Calvary. Its shaft rises from a sloping square plinth, set on an octagonal base. The plinth is inscribed 12 o'clock face: REMEMBER WITH/ PRAYER AND GRATITUDE/ (names)/ OF BARTON SEAGRAVE/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919/ GRANT THEM O LORD THINE ETERNAL PEACE. 6 o'clock face: THIS MEMORIAL IS/ ERECTED BY PUBLIC/ SUBSCRIPTION 3 o'clock face: ALSO THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR 1939 - 45./ (names)/ GOD SHALL WIPE AWAY ALL TEARS FROM/ THEIR EYES AND THERE SHALL BE NO/ MORE DEATH NEITHER SORROW/ NOR CRYING NEITHER SHALL THERE BE/ ANY MORE PAIN FOR THE FORMER THINGS ARE/ PASSED AWAY/ REVELATION 21.4.
