Description
Earthworks and subsurface: a large moated enclosure, probably that of Waterville Manor, flanked on the north by two parallel banks, standing c.10ft at highest. A platform may mark site of gatehouse (known c.1307). The old road runs up to latter point and out southwards. Fishponds to south, and other earthworks less easy to interpret. Leland mentions seeing ruins of a defensive wall to castle. Standing structures: castle bank, park of Walter de Langton’s house of c.1301 known to have possessed a porch now demolished. Manor house C17 within probable medieval elements. {AM7} Barn: thatch is thinning, especially on the eastern side, and there are two large cracks running through the brick lintel into the stonework above. Barn locked, therefore access to all timber and state of interior was impossible. Suggest this building needs a thorough inspection. {AM12 1980}
