Description
Country house. C.1870 by E.F. Law for Palmer family. Brick with ashlar dressings and Swithland slate roof. Double-depth plan in French Chateau style. 2 and 3 storeys, parts with attic. Main front of 9-window range. Central porch supported on 2 pairs and 2 single columns has plain entablature, dentilled cornice and open balustrade above. Panelled door to left has moulded stone architrave. Centre 5 bays have sash windows with moulded stone architraves and alternate triangular and segmental bracketted pediments over. Attic storey has similar windows set in eaves dormers with pediments and linked by an open balustrade. Central dormer has arched pediment with finial. End bays are 3 storeys forming corner towers with 2-storey canted stone bay windows with pairs of sash windows to second floor. Ashlar quoins and dentilled cornices. Square pinnacles with urns at corners of towers linked to central eaves dormers by open balustrade. Gambrel roof to centre range and mansard roofs to towers with cast iron railings and finials to tower ridges. Panelled brick stacks at ridge with ashlar cornices. Elevation to left is similar of 5-window range. The end two bays form the corner towers with squared bay windows at ground floor. Rear elevation is similar to main front without porch. Elevation to right of main front is similar, of 3-window range. Interior: double-height entrance hall has grand staircase dividing into two flights at base and half landing and flanking walls of 4 bays with pilasters subdivided by moulded cornice. Moulded plaster ceiling. 2 rooms to left and one to right of entrance hall have similar plaster decoration. Some C19 fireplaces in principal rooms. 2 C19 service staircases with turned balusters. Fragments of C18 house may be incorporated.
