Description

Row of model estate cottages. c.1880. Polychromatic brickwork consisting of red, blue and white brick in contrasting bands with courses of herringbone masonry of ironstone. Slate roof, brick ridge stacks. 2-storey, 6-window range. Plank doors with overlights to centre and to left and right with one-light casements to left and right ends and to right of middle door and one 4-light casement to each cottage; 2-light casements to first floor throughout. Windows and doors have chamfered wood lintels, chamfered blue brick jambs, blue brick sills and hood moulds, those of ground floor openings of each cottage linked. Chamfered plinth chiefly of blue brick, first floor string course of blue stretchers framing red stretchers alternating with terracotta mailhead insets, blue brick quoins and moulded red brick eaves. Built by the Thornton estate as model estate cottages.
