Listed Building: SUNDIAL COTTAGE (15/228)

Shown as Chareen on Ordnance Survey map. House. C17 modified C19. Regular coursed limestone with ashlar banding and dressings. Collyweston slate roof. 3-unit plan, with rear wing. Single storey with attic. Main front of 4 bays, 3-window range. Centre 2 bays are ashlar, and break forward separately. These projections were originally intended to continue at roof level to form gabled eaves dormers; probably removed C19. Bay to right of centre has C19 tripartite sash window set in and breaking through a moulded stone surround, formerly a stone mullion window. Chamfered plinth below window and moulded string course above. Similar tripartite sash window, to far right, has moulded stone surround with cornice over. C19 casement window, to far left, has similar surround with cornice over. Small single-light window, to left of centre, has single-light C19 casement window, above, set under eaves. Bay to left of centre has a 6-panelled door with a moulded stone surround and 4-centred arch-head. Flanking single-light windows, with moulded stone surrounds, now blocked. Chamfered plinth below and moulded stone cornice above. 3 hipped eaves dormers with C19 casement windows. Ashlar gable parapets and ashlar ridge and end stacks. Left gable has an inscribed sundial. Rear elevation has a projecting wing, to left, with C19 casement windows and a C19 oven, with hipped roof, to right. Fragments of chamfered masonry reset to centre of range. Interior not inspected but noted as having ogee moulded spine beam in centre room with a chip carved rosette in the soffitt. Plank door with moulded battens and original hinges.
