Description

Pair of houses, formerly inn. C18, altered C20. Coursed squared limestone, reed thatch roof, brick end and ridge stacks. 2- and 3- unit plans. 2 storeys and attic; 7-window range. Central carriage arch with depressed-arched head. C20 2-light casement window to far left and to right of centre, that to left (Lower Gate House) with flat-arched head, that to right (Upper Gate House) with wood lintel. 2-light casement windows to ground and 1st floors with flat-arched heads. Two roof dormers with 2-light casement windows. Stone-coped gables. Ridge stack to right of centre is cross-shaped and is partly original. Interior: Lower Gate House has large open fireplace with chamfered bressumer in room which was formerly a bakery. Chamfered spine beams, old stud crown glass overlight. Collar truss roof with 2 tiers of purlins and ridge piece. Upper Gate House has spine beams.
