Description

Shown on Ordnance Survey map as The Old Cottage. Building of indeterminate use, known as the Bede House, or Watch House, and attached house. Probably C16 and C19. Regular coursed limestone with Colleyweston slate and concrete tile roofs. 2-unit plan. 3 storeys. 2-window range. Central C19 plank door under wood lintel has 2 small C19 casements above under stone lintel of original first floor door openings. C19 casement to right of door is under continuous lintel with door. Small single-light window to left under stone lintels. Remains of 2 casement windows at second floor have ashlar dressings and continuous labels with carved head stops. Ball-flower corbel table above with central plaque having carved heads above and below. Ashlar gable parapets with carved kneelers. Old brick end stacks. That to left has an ashlar base and ashlar cornice with nail-head decoration. One-unit cottage attached to right has concrete tile roof and one C19 casement under wood lintel. C19 plank door in right gable. Rear elevation has 2 leaded casements under wood lintels. External stone staircase rises to left and turns into open passage at first floor between the two buildings. C19 casement to first floor of houses. C19 single-unit, single-storey extension to right. Interior of Bede House has open fireplace with bressumer and ceiling beams with joists horizontally laid. Second floor of Bede House, accessible from external stair has triangular-head wall niche. Brick stack has access point, said to be a look out. House has remains of open fireplace. External carved masonry is probably reset. Said to have connections with the Tresham family who lived at the Manor House (q.v.).
