Description

Drawbridge over canal. 1812-15, restored C19 and C20. Brick abutments supporting a pivoting wooden deck, with handrail on one side. Deck is suspended by chains from two balance beams which pivot on two upright posts. Beams act as counterweights allowing deck to be raised or lowered across 'narrows' below lock No. 13 (q.v.). One of two standing drawbridges on the Northampton Arm. This type of canal structure has now become very rare in England and this important survivor has group value with the Northampton flight of locks (q.v.).
