Listed Building: Church of the Holy Trinity (17/30)

Church. Mid and late C13, late C14, restored C19. Squared coursed limestone with ashlar spire and lead roofs. Aisled nave, chancel and west tower. South elevation of chancel of 2-window range of 2- and 3-light windows with Y- and intersecting tracery. Shallow gabled roof with plain parapet and finial. 4-light Perpendicular east window with panel tracery. Flanking 2-stage buttresses. North elevation of chancel is blank. C19 lean-to boiler house is attached to east end of north aisle. C19 two-light square-head window with door to left. South aisle of 4 bays, 3-window range with 2-light square-head window, with geometrical tracery, to left. Similar central window and 3-light window with intersecting tracery to right. Lean-to roof with ashlar parapets and 3 gargoyles. 3-light Perpendicular east window with 4-centred arch head and hollow responds. 2-light, square-head, west window with geometrical tracery. Gabled porch in bay to left of centre has 2-centred double-chamfered arch heads to inner and outer doorways. The outer doorway has nailhead decoration and polygonal responds and inner doorway has renewed shafts. North aisle of 5 bays, 4-window range. 2 three-light Perpendicular windows with 4-centred arch heads to centre bays, and 3-light windows with Y-tracery to flanking bays. Window to far right has renewed tracery and is set in square-head recess. North door in bay to right of centre has 2-centred arch head. 2-stage buttresses between windows. 3 bays to right break forward slightly. Lean-to roof with ashlar gable parapets. Blocked west window. South nave clerestory of 4-window range of 2-light square-head windows with hood moulds and carved label stops. Shallow gable roof with plain ashlar parapets, corbel table, 3 gargoyles and finial. North clerestory is a 4-window range of single-light square-head windows. Late C13 west tower of 2 stages with 3-stage angle buttresses at corners. C19 west doorway has 2-centred arch head with 4 chamfers and one order of shafts. Tall lancet window above has carved label stops. Band of plain corbels to upper part of lower stage has tie-bar above. Upper stage is ashlar with triple arcade to each face, with 2-centred arch heads and shafts. Centre bay of each face is a 2-light bell-chamber opening. Corbel table above, with plain parapet and octagonal pinnacles at corners. Set-back octagonal broach spire with 2 tiers of lucarnes. Interior: 4-bay nave arcade of double-chamfered arches with quatrefoil piers and polygonal responds. Double-chamfered chancel arch with semi-circular bracketed responds. Triple-chamfered tower arch with polygonal responds. Piscina, with roll moulded arch, to left of altar and piscina with plain arch in south aisle. Double arcade, with trefoil heads and cluster shafts, to south wall of chancel and similar arcade of 4 bays to north wall. 3 carved heads to spandrels of arches and remains of relieving arch above arcade with 4 holes for acoustic jars. One jar remains. Blocked doorway to right of arcade originally led to chantry chapel/vestry, demolished in C16. Single-stage internal buttress to south aisle wall. C19 roof structures. C19 furnishings, font and pulpit. Perpendicular style painted screen around vestry in north aisle is said to incorporate parts of rood screen. Stained glass: east window of south aisle has 3 mid C16 roundels depicting biblical scenes and 2 mid C17 rectangular panels depicting saints. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.183).
