Description
The house is set back from the road with a gravel court; double entrance, presumably once enclosed by iron railings. 1700, a magnificent house, 2 storeys and semi-basement, 5 windows. Built of coursed rubble with flush dressed quoins; deep plinth; band at 1st floor level has deep moulding top and bottom; massive coved plaster eaves continue round the sides and the steep double gabled stone slate roof is splayed on the corners to cover this and it has a slate topping across the gable ends. Plain erges on the gables and 4 large stone chimney stacks with a panel on each face, and heavy cornices. Lunettes in each gable. Road front, 3 large hipped dormers 2-light stone mullioned windows to the basement; the ground and 1st floor windows are early sash complete with heavy glazing bars, wide wooden cases, shallow reveals, wide architrave with moulded inner and outer edge and moulded cill. The architrave of the central window is eared and shouldered with ramped volutes at sides. Central entr nce approached by semi-circular flight of 6 steps. Heavy doorcase, 2 panelled pilasters with consoles supporting a triangular pediment which breaks into the cill of 1st floor window, relatively low semi-circular-headed doorway with pilasters and archivolt and between this and the base of the pediment is an oval light with double moulded archivolt. Good panelled door. Single storey extension east with lateral gable. 2 late sash windows. Good interior, and garden front very much as street front Nos 2 to 36 (even) and 42 to 46A (even) and 52 to 98 (even) form a group.
