Description
Summerhouse, c1835. Cob rendered brick and wooden rusticwork with thatch roof, gabled to front and hipped and curving to rear. Plan of entrance passage placed crossways leading to circular main space. Front of split branch rusticwork has octagonal window with decorated surround. Pediment-like gable over with rock-work centre. To either side a rusticwork door and small windows towards the rear. Interior: the entrance passage has elaborate split-twig decoration laid on bark and the door and window frames have finely wrought surrounds with split-twigs closely spaced mostly in herringbone pattern. The main space has shell and rock-work walls. A fitted bench goes all round and has curving arms at the ends by the doorway. This is also completely covered in fine split-twig work. In the centre a matching regency-style pedestal table with pieces of decorative root on the pedestal. An unusual and remarkable survival.
