Description
Church. C13, C14 and C17. Squared coursed and regular coursed lias with lead roof. Aisled nave, chancel, transept and west tower. Chancel south elevation of 3-window range of 2-light windows with reticulated tracery to the right and one single-light square-headed window with cusping to the left. North elevation similar of one-window range with north door having a segmental head. 3-light C19 east window. South transept has 3-light window with reticulated tracery. South aisle of 2-window range of 3-light square-headed windows with quatrefoil tracery. South porch between windows has pointed single chamfered outer arch and C14 door surround. Datestone on the porch W.C.M.C./1618. North aisle of 2-window range of square-headed windows similar to those in the south aisle. C14 blocked doorway between has ogee arched head with finial. 2-light east window. Clerestory of 4-window range of 2-light square-headed windows partially renewed in C19. West tower C14, of 3 stages. Lower stage has round-headed door opening with 2-light square-headed window above clasping buttresses at corners. Third stage has 2-light square-headed bell chamber openings to each face. Plain ashlar parapet. Interior: Double-chamfered chancel arch, 4-bay nave arcade of double-chamfered arches with alternate round and octagonal piers. Single chamfered tower arch. Chancel roof: Perpendicular style retains some original timbers. Nave roof C19, with C14 corbels. Aisle roofs contain some medieval timbers. Tomb recess in south transept probably c.1300. Similar recess in north aisle. Monuments: 2 late C18 tablets on south chancel wall to Knowler family. Stained glass, east window; south chancel windows and north aisle east window. Large parish chest with iron banding. C14/C15 south door is panelled and studded. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.437).
