Description

Rectory, now house. C14 origins, but mainly C16, C17 and late C18. Squared coursed limestone with Colleyweston slate roof. L-shape plan. 2 storeys with attic. Main front of 3 bays. 2-window range to right is rendered and has two-, 3- and 4-light leaded casements at ground floor under rendered heads with keyblocks. 2 sash windows with glazing bars, at first floor, under similar heads. Central part-glazed door, between windows, has a rusticated rendered surround. Large polygonal stone bay to left is probably late C18. 3 sash windows to first floor with glazing bars, and plain ashlar surrounds and keyblocks. C20 leaded casements to ground floor with similar surrounds. Gabled roof with polygonal hipped roof over bay to left. Ashlar stacks at ridge and end. Garden front to left of main front is a 4-window range of irregularly spaced late C18 plain and tripartite sash windows, all with glazing bars. Roof dormer to right. 2 bays to left are probably late C18. C20 extensions to rear. Wall attached to left of garden front has 2 reset datestones, 1570 and 1631. Interior: room to right of hall has remains of large open fireplace with bressumer, room to left of entrance has late C18/early C19 reset marble fireplace; some moulded spine beams. Noted as incorporating C14 wall internally. Birthplace of John Dryden, poet, born 1631. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.77; V.C.H.: Northamptonshire, Vol.3, p.164).
