Description
Item includes Poplars, The Avenue. Town house, now two dwellings. Datestone 1778 with C19 additions. Entrance front of limestone ashlar, rear of squared coursed ironstone with slate roof. Double-depth plan. 3-storeys, 3-window range; Central C19 door in arched opening with pediment over, is flanked by canted stone bay windows with C20 casements. First and second floor have moulded stone cornice over. Flat string course between ground and first floors. Rusticated quoins, moulded stone cornice and ashlar parapet with central datestone. Gabled roof with brick stacks at ends. Mid C19 single-storey extension to right has sash window with moulded stone surround and hipped roof with large glazed rooflight. Elevation to left has C19 stone window and some sashes with glazing bars. Rear, now Burford House, has 3 sash windows with glazing bars and ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. C18 ironstone wall with C19 gatepiers and wrought-iron gates attached to left of Burford House. Interior not inspected but The Poplars noted as having a mid C19 staircase with quarter landings and turned balustrade. Other rooms reputed as having panelling.
