Description
Farmhouse, now a house. Built 1620 by Ellis Else, incorporating a late C16 open hall house. Altered 1648 and 1685. Remodelled and rear wing added c1848. Ironstone with limestone dressings, plain tile and Welsh slate roofs. Coped gables with kneelers, single grouped ridge, single gable and single side wall coped stone stacks. 2 storeys plus garrets, 4 bays, E-plan. The front has moulded stone mullioned casements with hood moulds. North side has, to right, a symmetrical front with a central crenellated mid C19 porch with Tudor arched doorway, flanked by single 3-light casements. Beyond on either side, a slightly projecting gabled wing each with a 3-light casement. Above are 2 cross-eaves, 3-light gabled dormers, flanked by single 3-light casements in the wings. Above again, each wing has a 2-light garret casement. Above the left one is a datestone inscribed "W E 1685". To the left, beyond a coped boundary wall, a 2-storey service wing with a full-width lean-to porch with a 3-light casement and a panelled door. Above, a 3-light casement. Adjoining single-storey C19 washhouse and coal store has a ridge stack and an off-centre door flanked by single casements. Rear has to right a C19 2-storey wing with a canted bay window and above it a tripartite sash. In the gable a reset datestone inscribed "1620 EE". To the left, a half-glazed door with flanking lights and to its left a tripartite sash. Above, 2 cross-eaves dormers with stepped-head tripartite sashes, all C19. To the right, a door and casement and beyond, 2 C19 Yorkshire sashes ith wooden lintels. Above, to left, a C19 margin light casement and above it, a blocked garret casement. Interior has a central stairwell with an early C19 oak staircase leading to a balustraded gallery with coved ceiling and Gothic plasterwork. The centre of the house has a noteworthy early C16 smoke-blackened roof structure with cambered tie beams and cambered collars to all rafters. The remainder has a late C17 principal rafter roof with single purlins.
