Listed Building: Church of St. Mary (1190967)

Church. C14 tower, chancel and nave rebuilt 1760 for George Lynn, and remodelled c1864. Limestone ashlar with lead and Colleyweston slate roofs. Nave, chancel and west tower. South elevation of chancel of 3 bays, one window range, with central, C19, three light-window with tracery. Flanking bays are blank. Hipped roof with Colleyweston slates. C19 three-light east window with intersecting tracery. North elevation of chancel of 3 blank bays with centre projecting bay corresponding with monument in chancel. Square head priest door to right. South elevation of nave of 3 bays, 2-window range of 3-light windows with Geometrical tracery. C19 south doorway to far left has 2-centred arch head and one order of shafts. Shallow gabled roof with plain parapets. North elevation of nave of 3-window range of C19 three-light windows similar to south elevation. West tower of 3 stages with 2- and 3-stage angle buttresses to western corners, those to north west corner have large projections. C19 three-light west window in lower stage has 2 shields, above, of Knyvet and Basset families. Similar shields to north and south faces. C14 single light window, with cusping, to each face of second stage. C14 two-light bell-chamber openings to each face of upper stage, have transoms and carved label stops. String course above with carved corbels and plain parapet with central cross slits. Crocketed octagonal spire rises from behind parapet and has 2 tiers of lucarnes. Shields above first stage of lucarnes. Interior; C14 triple chamfered and hollowed chancel arch with octagonal responds. Similar tower arch. Tower walls have vaulting ribs and 4- carved corbles. C19 nave and chancel roofs. C17 panelling in chancel, probably reset. C18 communion rail with turned balusters. Late C18 pulpit with fielded panelling. Small C19 octagonal font. South door in chancel is false. Mid C19 chamber organ from Southwick Hall (q.v.). Stained glass; south windows of nave have C19 stained glass. Monuments; matrices of brasses in nave floor. George Lynn died 1621, inscribed floor slabs to Lynn family in chancel. 4 have circular armorial panels. George Lynn died 1758 attributed to Roubilliac, in recess to north wall of chancel. Grey and white marble with oval medallion of deceased suspended from broad flat obelisk; drapery below and seated female figure to right, leaning against urn. Augusta Lynn died 1827; sarcophagus tablet, by Whiting, to south wall of chancel. George Lynn died 1827, and family; similar tablet below. C14 and C15 masonry fragments in church.
