Description

Lodge, gates and gatepiers. 1822-3 by John Raffield for 3rd Earl of Pomfret. Limestone ashlar, coursed squared limestone, hipped slate roof, brick lateral stack. 3-unit plan. 1 and 2 storeys. Cast-iron gates with spear finials. Tall rusticated gatepiers with alternate bands of vermiculation, ironstone plinths, horizontal oval paterae to frieze, moulded cornices, topped by urns with ball finials. Flanked by round-arched pedestrian gateways with similar cast-iron gates and gatepiers. Curved stone-coped walls of coursed squared stone either side, terminated by plain piers. Round-arched doorway in left wall. Right wall extends to 2-storey lodge flanked by single-storey wings with lean-to roofs. Central block has 6-panel door to right, a 12-pane sash window to ground floor left and 9-pane sash to 1st floor, all with wood lintels; plain brick eaves. Wings have 12-pane sash windows and wood lintels. Interior: ogee-stop-chamfered spine beam. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire: 1973, p205)
