Description

Gates, gatepiers and screen. Dated 1701. Ironwork probably by Jean Tijon, gatepiers probably by William Winde for the Duchess of Norfolk. 4 fine limestone ashlar gatepiers with wrought-iron gates and railings. Outer piers are rusticated with central relief and moulded cornices. Gadrooned urn finials surmounted by small eagles. Centre piers have central arch head niches with fielded panel below and armorial device above. Rusticated jambs, moulded cornice and large eagle finials. Centre pair of gates have scroll panel standards, very fine overthrow with leaf decoration, interwined date numerals and central coronet. Pair of hand gates, flanking, are similar. Railings attached to left and right have scroll cresting and ashlar plinth. Gatepiers have armorial devices of the Duchess of Norfolk and her second husband Sir John Germain.
