Description
Pair of cottages. C18 with C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed limestone rubble, thatch roof, brick ridge stacks. No. 83 has one-unit plan with one-unit addition. No. 85 has a 2-unit plan. 2-storey, 2-window range. Plank doors to left and right of centre, with wood lintels and thatched hoods. 3-light leaded casement windows to ground floor except for similar 2-light window to ground floor far right. 2-light leaded windows to 1st floor in eyebrow dormers. All windows have wood lintels. Interior. Both cottages have open fireplaces with stop-chamfered bressumer, that to No. 85 with salt cupboard. Chamfered spine beams. Formerly known as Legger's Cottages. The cottages are situated near the North portal of the Blisworth tunnel on the Grand Union Canal, which was negotiated by professional leggers, who lay on the top of canal barges and legged them through the tunnel.
