Description

1887 by John Sebastian Gwilt in asymmetrical Tudor style with timbered addition to south of 1909 by A C Blomfield. Coursed stone with slate roof and stone chimneys. Main building, south section, of 2 storeys with 2 windows of 3 lights flanking a centre window of 3 lights, segmental arches, under gable with finial. 3 mullion and transom of 6 lights on ground floor. String between storeys breaks over coat of arms. Plinth. Parapet. To left, plain doorway set back, rectangular dripmould and 1 window over. Centre section of 3 storeys, attics and basement. Parapet and 3 gables with finials, each with a window of 2 lights. 7 windows to 1st and 2nd floors arranged alternatively with single and 2 lights to the 2nd floor and 2 and 4 lights to the 1st floor. 6 similar windows to the ground floor. 4-centre arched doorway with carved spandrels and rectangular dripmould. Steps up. Right section of 2 storeys and attics has gable with finial and window of 2 lights. Windows of 6 lights on 1st and ground floors. Larger gable with finial and window of 2 lights has windows of 2 and 4 lights on the 1st ground floors. Porch to right. Parapet. Strings between storeys. Wall in stone with tall arched gateway to left with overthrow with parapet and cornice bearing shield. Southern addition: of 1909 is of 1 storey and attics in coursed stone with stone slate roof. Left has 2 half-timbered gables each with a window of 2 lights on brackets over canted bay of 5 lights. 3 windows of 2 lights on groun floor and plain door. Buttress to right. 3 stone stacks. Plinth to right bay. Right-hand wing of 1 storey has 6 windows of 2 lights. Includes wall of coursed rubble with rounded top with tall gate piers with ball finials and iron gates. All the listed buildings in New Street form a group.
