Description
Dated 1907, by Arthur Blomfield. Perpendicular style. 2 storeys in coursed stone with stone dressings and stone slate roof. 2 wings of 2 storeys with 2 mullion and transom windows of 6 lights beneath 2 gables with finials. Rectangular dripmoulds continue as strings. String continues cills. String over 4 windows of 4 lights with mullions and transoms arranged in pairs on the ground floor. Plinth. Angle buttresses at quoins. Porches of 2 storeys canted in angle, with crenallated parapet. 1 window of 4 lights over 4-centred doorway with carved spandrels and 3 light rectangular fanlight. Side lights. Plinth. Taller centre section breaks forward with moulded gable end with elaborate double chimney stack. 2 turrets at angles, with crenellated parapets and gargoyle waterspouts to cornice. Top is lantern with single lancet lights to each face and irregular arrow slits. Central figure of Laxton in niche under carved canopy and central large perpendicular window under ornamented dripmould. Strings at cill and between storeys. Blank carved arcades below and basement lights. Foundation plaque. Includes low wall of stone with 2 sets of gate piers with iron finials without lamps. Iron gates. Similar in detail to Main Building (The Cloisters). All the listed buildings in New Street form a group.
