Description

Manor house. Probably mid C16 to late C17. Limestone ashlar with Weldon slate roof. Originally 3-unit plan with central porch. 2 storeys with attic; 3-window range. Centre bay breaks forward as 3-storey gabled porch with arch-head door opening. Studded plank door has square-head moulded stone surround. Two 2-light stone mullion windows to porch with moulded string courses between. Flanking, 4-light stone mullion windows. Ashlar gable parapets, with kneelers and finial blocks to porch, and 2 hipped roof dormers. Large ashlar stacks with moulded cornices, symmetrically at ridge and ends. Blank diamond shape tablet in porch gable. C17 gabled wing breaks forward to right with 3- and 4-light stone mullion windows to each floor. Plank door in return wall. Rear has late C17/early C18 staircase projection. Interior has open fireplaces with bressumers and C17 fireplaces with moulded stone surrounds. Late C17/early C18 dog-leg stair with turned balustrade to first floor landing. Plank doors with stop chamfered surrounds. Originally part of Kirby Hall estate with long unbroken tenancy and subsequently ownership in the same family.
