Description
Manor house. 1633 and 1655, partly refenestrated C18. Coursed limestone rubble and ashlar with ashlar dressings and stone slate roofs. Chamfered plinth, quoins, coped gables with kneelers, 3 paired gable and quadruple ridge coped stone stacks. 2 storeys plus attics, 4 unequal bays, T-plan. West front has an off-centre 2-storey gabled porch with Tudor arched doorway and a 3-light mullioned casement above it, both with hood moulds. Above again, a datestone inscribed "J C 1633". To left of the porch, a longer range with, to right, a glazing bar sash on each floor and above them, a hipped dormer. To right of the porch, a setback single bay with a 6/6 sash on each floor, both with keystoned heads. To right again, the cross wing gable has a 4-light mullioned casement with hood mould and above, an off-centre 6/6 sash. Above again, a central 2-light mullioned casement with hood mould. Beyond, to the right, a single storey kitchen with pantile roof, C20. Beyond to the left, a 2-storey, 2-bay former stable with all C20 fenestration. Rear elevation, to east, has an off-centre corniced ashlar doorcase with half-glazed door flanked to left by a sash. Above, a hipped dormer. To its right, a gabled stair turret with a sash to ground and first floors. To right again, a range with 3 sashes on each floor and above, 2 hipped dormers. All the sashes have glazing bars and keystoned heads. Beyond to the left, a gabled wing with near-central 3-light mullioned casement, and above, 2 similar 2-li sements and above again, a central 2-light casement and a blank datestone. In the return angle, a C19 casement and above, in the gable, a datestone inscribed "1665 C G E ". South gable has to left a C19 half-glazed door and to right a 2-light mullioned casement. Above, 2 similar casements. Above again, a flat-roofed dormer. All the mullioned windows have hood moulds. Interior has much restored C17 winder stair with Dining room, drawing room and 3 bedrooms have full height C18 fielded panelling, C18 fielded panelled doors and C19 fireplaces, with segmental headed C17 ashlar fireplace in drawing room with moulded mantelshelf. Entrance hall has Tudor arched ashlar fireplace. South end has moulded span beam with stops. Single purlin principal rafter roof with collars.
