Description
Country house divided into 4 units. Early C18, extended C19-C20. Ironstone ashlar, slate and plain-tile roofs, stone end and internal stacks. Double-depth plan. 3 storeys and attic; 5-window range. Present entrance front to N. has central part-glazed door approached by flight of 9 stone steps with wrought iron balustrade. Channelled stone surround to door with fluted Doric pilasters, entablature with triglyphs and paterae to metopes, and deep moulded cornice. 12-pane sash windows to ground and 1st floors with stone sills and surrounds with key blocks. 2-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion windows to basement, blocked to right of centre, mullions replaced by casements to left. Wave moulded plinth, storey band, moulded and hollow-chamfered stone cornice, raised quoins, stone-coped gables and roof dormer windows. 3-storey wings project either side. That to right has sash windows similar to those of main block to basement and 1st floor, and horizontal oval windows to ground floor with mouled stone surrounds and key blocks. That to left has similar sashes to ground and 1st floors and 3-light ovolo- moulded stone mullion window to basement. Present garden front to S is similar with large sundial over door. Wings are in line with main block on this side and have symmetrical single-storey, 3-window front sections with 3 horizontal oval windows either side with key blocks, and moulded parapet cornice swept up to level of storey band of main block. Interior has open well staircase with turned balusters and carved tread-ends. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, 1973, p.311).
