Description
School and school-house. 1879 with later C19 and C20 extensions by office of E.F. Law. Coursed squared ironstone, ironstone dressings, plain-tile roof, stone ridge, lateral and internal stacks. Victorian Gothic style. H-plan. 2 storeys; 6-window range. Gabled porch to left of centre with plank door and ornamental hinges, stone lintel and small 1-light windows above in head of moulded pointed arched surround with hood mould. 4-light stone mullion windows to ground floor and hipped dormers. Projecting cross wings either end, that to left forming school-house with bay window to ground floor of gable end, 4-light stone mullion and transom window to gable end, circular sexfoiled window above, with small circular windows either side of base, and hood mould with carved label stops. Circular datestone to gable with hood mould and inscribed BLISS/ENDOWED SCHOOLS/FOUNDED AD 1673/REBULT 1879. Caernarvon-arched door to inner side. Similar doorway to left side elevation of school-house wing and to wall joining school-room wing to Heyford Cottage adjacent to right. Chamfered plinth, sill band, stone-coped gables with kneelers and ball finials and square bell-turret with pyramidal roof to ridge of right wing. Included for group value.
