Description

{1} A watching brief was undertaken during the preparation of the site for five new houses. The investigation monitored a partial topsoil strip and subsequent terracing of the southern part of the site, with the excess material dumped across the central part of th site, as well as the excavation of a series of drains and soakaways. A series of medieval pottery kilns were found. {3} Mix of surface finds & stoke hole contents from Rod Conlon's archive but derived from this investigation. Potterspury ware c.1660? Staffordshire type decoration. Potters known to be working on this site, pers com Conlon: Leonard Benton or John Stow Snr(1695)/John Stow Jnr, potter (1710). Folder contents; SMR Report Form by Ivens RN7543021. In addition other papers, photos & copies of historic plans gathered by Conlon concerning L Benton potter who lived there.
