Description
Buildings recording and analysis during conversion of the former White Horse coaching inn has shown that the fabric of the existing building dates to around 1770, although vestiges may survive of two earlier, separate structures, both themselves inns. These have been traced in documentary sources to as early as 1685 and were amalgamated under single ownership around 1720. Fragments of historic 19th century décor show the former inn to have been a fashionable place to stay towards the end of its life. It was closed due to bankruptcy, partly brought on by competition from the railways and was subsequently returned to two properties, both private homes. During the latter half of the 20th century the two properties were reunited and converted into offices for the local authority.
