Description

{1} An archaeological watching brief was maintained by University of Leicester Archaeological Services on behalf of the Jesus Army Charitable Trust between September 2003 and November 2004 during the restoration of the former Cannon Cinema, Abington Square, Northampton. The public circulation areas were monitored, in particular the main entrance foyer, stalls foyer, stalls, mezzanine balcony and alcoves, circle foyer, the auditorium and the front elevation. The alterations have shown sensitivity and respect to original fabric of historical or architectural importance and a number of original features removed in the 1970's have been carefully reinstated. Many of the alterations have been required to bring the building up to modern standards and to make it suitable for its new multi functional use, including modifications to the main auditorium and the installation of wheelchair access. The alterations and new decorative schemes have been undertaken in a way which is in keeping with the building's style and design. During the restoration, some hitherto concealed features relating to the original structure were revealed and recorded. Accession no: NJAC.2004
