Description

{1} The current investigation revealed the further extents of late 18th and 19th century sand and gravel extraction pits located in trench 2. The greatest concentration of extraction pits occurred in the area to the south of the evaluation trench. Over the remainder of the site, a number of probable pits and postholes (mainly undated) were recorded, together with part of a ditch running parallel with Stamford Lane. The ditch probably represents the continuation of a feature recorded in trench 2 and identified as potentially Romano-British in date. Finds from the more recently excavated ditch indicated a date of late 16th to mid 17th century.
