Description

Building recording was carried out in response to condition (10) on planning consent EN/11/00488/FUL and in accordance with EH Level 2 prior to conversion fo farm buildings to residential use. The survey work established that the farm buildings at Chelveston have been considerably altered and repaired. Structural evidence suggests that the barn is the earliest building, dating from the later 18th century or early 19th century. It is the only building which retains its original pegged trusses and much of its roof structure. Despite later alteration the barn retains many features, including the ventilation slits and owl holes, synonymous with its granary use and a large and decorative mortice lock. The barn was most likely adapted for stock-rearing in the later part of the 19th century as a response to the collapse in arable farming and a move to stock/dairy farming. Later alterations to the farm include the remodelling and enlargement of the northern range. This occurred after 1900 and may relate to the sale of the buildings in 1919. It is probably at this point that most of the buildings were re-roofed using a simple side purlin roof in machine cut soft wood. Information from OASIS Online Form.
