Description
{1} For AOC Archaeology Group. Detailed magnetic survey (gradiometry) was used as an efficient and effective method of locating archaeological anomalies. Fieldwork was carried out over three days from 14/04/2010 to 16/04/2010, during which time the weather was dry and sunny. The gradiometry survey was conducted over approx. 8ha of arable farmland, located just north west of Sudborough. The results from the geophysical survey have identified two positive curvilinear features which may be archaeological in origin, possibly indicating infilled cut features such as ditches. Also present throughout the survey are small positive and negative area responses also indicative of former cut and banked features. Positive linear anomalies are present which have been identified as relating to land drains while numerous positive discrete features are seen throughout the survey and are interpreted as possible pits. Further linear and area responses have been indentified but are possibly of geological origin, although an archaeological cause may not be ruled out. Three survey areas lay on the route of the Gartree Roman Road and although positive and negative area anomalies have been identified in the data, there are no result which are directly indicative of a former road structure.
