ENN107844 - Land at the proposed A14 Junction 10A and A6 Link Road, 2013 (Desk based assessment)

{1} There are no designated assets within or adjacent to the study area. There are cropmarks of two pit alignments in the vicinity, both of which may extend into the study area. Pit alignments usually date to the late Bronze Age/early Iron Age and are thought to be territorial boundaries. In the late Iron Age/Roman period, there were a number of fairly small, discrete farmsteads with accompanying fields systems, of which some extend into the northern part of the study area. Fieldwalking in the area to the north-east of the study area prior to the construction of the A14 found dense scatters of Roman pottery with evidence of possible wall and bank. Anglo-Saxon pottery and part of an early Saxon enclosure have been found c50m from the north-eastern corner of the study area. Large parts of the study area were quarried for ironstone in the 19th and 20th centuries and there is no potential for archaeological remains in these areas. Within the rest of the study area it is considered that there is a moderate/high potential for Iron Age/Roman and/or Saxon activity.
