ENN107859 - Land at Milthorpe, 2013 (Desk Based Assessment)

{1} There are no designated assets within the site boundary, although two grate II listed buildings are located adjacent to the site. An Iron Age coin was found mid 19th century and a large number of Roman coins and find stone were reported in 1742, although the exact location of the later item is unknown. Milthorpe and Weedon Lois were historically distinct settlements. The remains of a castle survive in Weedon Lois, which may have been constructed in the 11th century after the Norman Conquest by Giles de Pinkney. Also in Weedon from the early 12th century was a cellof the Benedictine priory of Oise, later sold to the Cistercian Priory at Biddlesden. A series of fish ponds may have been connected to the castle or priory. During development of housing in Milthorpe, west of the current site, a number of burials were found that could date to the Saxon or Medieval periods, although no associated artefacts were found. Cartographic evidence suggests that the site has been developed since at least the early 19th century, although there is some possibility for the below-ground archaeological remain survive.
