Description

{1} Archaeological strip, map and sample (SMS) investigation of the footprint of the public house was carried out prior to construction between 13th and 19th November 2018, while observation of the excavation of an attentuation tank took place between 3rd and 5th December. A cluster of archaeological features were identified within the NW part of the SMS investigation area characterised by quarry pits dating to the Iron Age. No archaeological features or deposits were identified in the attenuation tank area. The site is located within the larger area of the Network 401-A43 Brackley East development. This site covers a total area of c0.74ha. Also known as Brackley Public House and Lodge. {2} A combination of strip, map and sample invetigation along with archaeological observation was undertaken during the construction of a pub restaurant with associated access, parking and landscaping. The investigations revealed a small cluster of Iron Age remains, predominantly comprising quarry pits, but also including four small ditches and two postholes. The remains are likely to represent peripheral activity associated with the middle Iron Age settlement excavated immediately to the south-west. The finds assemblage included pottery, animal bone, ferrous smithing slag, vitrified clay lining and an iron nail.
