Description

{1} Monitoring during ground remediation works revealed extensive truncation across the site related to construction of a mid 20th century power station and mill. There were occasional patches of remnant buried soil overlying the gravel and alluvium. Hand auger survey recovered evidence for a palaeochannel in the north-western part of the site which produced a birch stake radio-carbon dated to the 14th-15th centuries. The context in which the stake was found also produced evidence for cultivated cereals, molluscs and weeds. Metal detector survey across the site recovered only post-medieval artefacts.
