Description

Archaeological recording (watching brief) was carried out during June 2021 on land at the former Greenfield Lodge Cottages, Strixton, Northamptonshire in connection with a replacement dwelling and associated carport. The work followed a Level 2 programme of historic building recording of the pair of former cottages prior to demolition to better understand the construction and development of the cottages. The HER indicated Romano-British settlement features to the southeast of the development site, the results of the excavation for the new dwelling revealed no evidence of settlement remains pre-dating the construction of the former C19 cottages and outbuildings. Although the development was small in scope, the results suggested that the site lies outside the main area of Romano-British activity to the southeast. The lack of residual finds from the soil overburden supported this hypothesis.
