ENN109382 - Chester Farm, 2016 (Excavation)

{1} Two Roman stone lined wells were excavated as part of a larger excavation undertaken by volunteers for Northants County Council. Abundant pottery and animal bone was recovered. Waterlogged deposits included part of a probable wooden bucket. {2} The first well measured 0.7m wide and 3.75m deep and contained seven fills. Abundant amounts of pottery and naimal bone were recovered from all fills, including four complete vessels. The lower waterlogged deposits contained the remanants of preserved wooden sticks and twigs, along with other environmental remains. The second well measured 0.7m wide and 3.35m deep with five fills. Vast quantities of animal bone were recovered from the fills, with generally low levels of pottery. A small number of metalwork finds were also recovered, including a bronze needle. As with the first well, the waterlogged deposits contained a large amount of preserved wooden sticks and twigs. The basal fill also contained part of what appears to be a wooden bucket.
