Description
Pre-Develop Archaeology was commissioned to undertake a Level 2 Historic Building Survey of the farm buildings at New House Farm, Kelmarsh Road. New House Farm appears to be a typical or slightly grander example of an improved enclosure farm, though its original layout and exact date are uncertain because no plans survive. It likely incorporated flexible buildings, including the main barn. The complex forms only a small part of major early‑19th‑century investment in the Naseby estate by the wealthy but largely absentee Fitzgerald family. Architectural evidence, its overall composition, diluted Italianate farmhouse style, blue‑brick detailing and machine‑sawn timbers, indicates a date after 1840, probably around 1850. This places its construction in the turbulent years surrounding John Fitzgerald’s bankruptcy in 1848 and his death in 1852, suggesting further research is needed to clarify its history.
