Description

Between 22nd April and 16 th June 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out a programme of Archaeological Observation, Investigation, Recording, Analysis and Publication in conjunction with metal detector survey during groundworks associated with the construction of cycle trails, routes and other works including car parking, landscaping and ecological enhancements for the Northampton Bike Park. The Site is located to the immediate south of the Registered Battlefield Site of the Battle of Northampton (1460). The archaeological works identified five linear features: one Mid to Late Iron Age ditch was recorded in the eastern half of the Site and one post-medieval ditch was identified in the western half of the Site. Two undated ditches (including a terminus) and an undated gully were also recorded in the western half of the Site. Fifteen metal objects were recovered through metal detector survey, four of which were possibly medieval or early post-medieval, and the remaining eleven were miscellaneous post-medieval or modern objects. No feature and no metal find could be associated to the Battle of Northampton (1460). None of the undated or post-medieval features was shown on the 1888-1913 Ordnance survey map.
