Description

The work was undertaken on 24th October 2022 in advance of the construction of a new garage and annexe at the property. The development site formerly contained a wooden garage. The proposed development area lay within the area of the shrunken medieval village of Warkton close to medieval earthworks. The remains of a Romano-British settlement, including a possible villa site lie to the north of the site. A medieval building was discovered during excavations to the west along Pipe Lane. An archaeologist monitored the excavation of four foundation trenches. Most of the original topsoil had been removed, probably prior to the former wooden garage being built. Hardcore and gravel were observed on the eastern side where the gravel drive had been lain, along with modern disturbance at the edge of a manhole cover at the south-east corner. The remains of two wooden post were also encountered close to the south-west and north-east corners; the latter concreted in. These were possibly associated with the former garage, or earlier fence posts. No archaeological remains or artefacts were identified or retrieved during the watching brief. Information from OASIS online form.
