Description
MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at Newton Road, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire. The site lies to the east of the town of Higham Ferrers, between Chelveston Road and Newton Road. The site is surrounded by fields although Newton Road lies adjacent to the south-west boundary. There are no Listed Buildings, Registered Parks and Gardens or Registered Battlefields within the 500m Historic Environment Record (HER) search radius of the site. An Iron Age to Romano-British settlement and associated field system lies to the south-west of the site. The northern boundary of the settlement has been established but the eastern limits are unknown and may extend eastwards close to the proposed development site. Possible Roman enclosures and an undated settlement with enclosures may also lie to the north-east of the site, which includes a trackway that may extend close to the eastern corner of the site. Consequently, the site lies within an archaeological landscape which, if excavated, may establish the eastern limits of the farmstead and field system, the south-western limits of the undated settlement to the north-east and whether there is a connection between the two. Cartographic evidence suggests that the site has remained within open farmland throughout the post-medieval and modern periods. Information from OASIS Online Form.
