Description

{1} Watching brief of c 3.75ha of land during redevelopment into supermarket, petrol station and associated car parking. All groundwork revealed a similar stratigraphic sequence of c1.5m of 19th century make-up material overlying alluvium and river gravel. A trench, 0.8m deep, was cut to provide a foundation for a kerb around the car park and followed the line of Victoria Promenade and Cattle Market Road. It contained two late Victorian pits. The watching brief did not locate the medieval defences, perhaps because the service trenches were too shallow, only exposing 19th-century make-up layers to a depth of 1.5m.
