Description

Archaeological assessment of the western part of St John's Car park shows it to have lain within the precinct of the former medieval hospital of St John. Within the area of the car park there once stood the so-called master's house, formerly the refectory of the hospital. This was demolished in 1871 to make way for St John's railway station which remained in use until July 1939. this in turn was demolished in 1960. Geotechnical test pits suggest that any remains might be buried under up to 3m of modern fill.
