Description

{1} Emergency excavation, circa 1971, over an area of 5.7 ha, of a large RB industrial site by P J Woods, prior to the construction of a playing field, revealed a complex of enclosures, pits and ditches (mostly dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD), hearths, traces of huts and "all the other remains of a major Roman industrial site". The remains of several R B pottery kilns, of a type found at Hardingstone, Quinton and Longthorpe; ie they were built above ground and had a floor of kiln bars resting on movable clay supports and a dome probably of turf were found.
