Description
The nearest scheduled monument was the remains of the monastic grange east of Manor Farm (SM 17133) which lay on the north side of Cold Ashby village, 600m to the north east of the application site. A further five scheduled monuments fell between 3km and 5km from the site, although none lay to the south. These were of medieval domestic and ecclesiastical settlement, other than a cluster of prehistoric monuments, to the north of the A14, which survived only as cropmarks. The only cultural heritage features or areas of interest recorded within the site were two areas of ridge and furrow earthworks. It may have been that the relative absence of features represented a bias in recorded sitesand/or a lack of any previous archaeological investigation. However, there was no reason to suspect the distribution of medieval activity and it was therefore likely that any unrecorded remains, other than the remains of medieval agriculture, would be of prehistoric and/or Roman dates.
